Robert Raikes's House
You can feel the history in every rafter of this characterful sixteenth-century timber framed building as you tour this extraordinary property.
By the late eighteenth century it had become the family home of Robert Raikes, a newspaper owner and editor and co-founder of the forerunner of the English states school system.
Raikes co-founded a number of Sunday schools in Gloucester, which ultimately became the forerunners of the English state school system. He had previously lived in nearby Ladybellegate House in Longsmith Street. This house was built about 1704 by the Wagstaffe family and contains some of the finest decorative ornamental plasterwork in the city.
