Bumper Opening Weekend at Gloucester Quays
Gloucester Quays Management have reported a higher than expected number of visitors during the opening weekend. Since the doors opened to the public on Thursday 21st May, it is estimated that some 100,000 people have passed through the centre.
Visitors were treated to a variety of nautical themed entertainment including stilt walking deep sea divers, fighting pirates, mermen and even a boat in the malls, in addition to the aerial acrobatic display on opening day and a free prize draw with some great prizes.
Franco Muccini, Centre Director said:
“Whilst we have had a greater number of visitors than expected, we had not seen any major teething problems, apart from Bank Holiday Monday when cars found it difficult to leave the Centre. There was a problem identified with the Highway traffic signalling which is out of our control but we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers”.
What has worked particularly well is the pedestrian link between the Quays and the Docks following the construction a pedestrian platform on Llanthony Road.
It has always been the intention to forge greater pedestrian linkages between the Quays, the Docks and the City Centre so that it all works as one and helps the existing local economy.
This has clearly been successful judging by the large amounts of people that could be seen every day walking to and from. To complement this we have seen many of our visitors arriving by public transport and on foot.
The Designer Outlet is gearing up for an even busier weekend this week when TV celebrity Gok Wan officially opens the Outlet on Saturday 30th at 10.30am. Combined with the Tall Ships Festival also taking place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, it is expected that Gloucester Quays will have great appeal to visitors from outside of the area as well as to locals.
