St Mary de Crypt Church

The church dates back to the Norman period, but was largely rebuilt in the fourteenth century. It boasts an impressive and eventful history.

It’s easy to see that this ancient parish church has certainly been through the wars, as suggested by sundial at the eastern end of the church which marks the point of impact of Royalist cannon fire during the siege of Gloucester in 1643.

Buried in the church along with many other Gloucester worthies is James “Jemmy “Wood, the notoriously mean Gloucester banker, who was the inspiration for Charles Dickens' Scrooge in A Christmas Carol.
