Peel L&P has announced the signing of Roller Express, Gloucestershire’s only dedicated roller disco venue, at premier southwest urban outlet Gloucester Quays. The 8,000 sq ft venue is due to open this autumn, representing the only roller disco to operate within a shopping centre environment.
Roller Express will be operated by the same team behind Skate Factory, a retail store in Gloucester with origins as far back as 1976, which creates bespoke roller skates, and sells a range of skateboards and accessories while operating a not-for-profit community membership club. The Roller Express venue will follow the same core principles as Skate Factory: encouraging participation in roller skating as a leisure activity, by keeping products and experiences as low-cost and accessible as possible, and facilitating a safe space for skaters of all ages and abilities.
From the new 100-capacity venue adjacent to Bill’s at Gloucester Quays, Roller Express will offer 34 sessions per week and will be open 7 days a week into the late evening. As a not-for-profit, Roller Express is able to provide great value experiences, with 100 minutes of roller skating costing as little as £5, with additional skate hire available and free skate pads.
They have also partnered with Heelys™ on a Skate School for all ages, from 10 am every Saturday and Sunday, and the new site is set to create approximately 15 full and part-time jobs, with applications open to people of all ages and even those with no skating experience.
Simon, Customer Experience Manager at Skate Factory, added: “We’re over the moon to be opening this new venue at Gloucester Quays. We have dedicated so much time and energy into making roller skating more appealing, more accessible, and more fun for the people of Gloucester, and over many decades have picked up a huge community following in the process. Gloucester Quays likewise has a great loyal customer base, so we are hoping to see those merge, as we look to open up an activity to as many people as possible.”
Owen Acland, Centre Manager at Gloucester Quays, commented: “Creating new and exciting reasons for people to visit Gloucester Quays is always top of mind when we are thinking about which businesses we should bring to the outlet. Roller Express does just that, but it gives us even more pleasure when we’re able to accommodate a business with strong community principles and a long-founded local connection. This will make for such a fun addition to Gloucester Quays, and a completely unique one at that.”
Providing space for Roller Express at Gloucester Quays is the latest way in which Peel L&P is looking to use Gloucester Quays to support a flourishing Gloucester community. Earlier this year, the destination also achieved ‘Net Zero Carbon – Operational Energy’, in line with UKGBC’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Framework.
